All colours may have an infinite number of values or tones. This is the lightness or darkness of a colour. So darkness of a colour is the amount of black added (shades), whereas lightness refers to the amount of white added (tints.)

Red value scale, using white to lighten in acrylics.

If we use black and white as an example, which we use to do value sketches at times, we will be able to build a simple value scale.

Look at the illustrations and diagrams and notice the varying tones. Taken from one of the projects we are certified to teach. This can also be applied in any medium you are using.
